muestra.
Those from Below: a gaze to / from the power*
Among the activities that Casa de las
Américas carries out in order to promote Latin-American and Caribbean culture we may point out the study
and the recognition of Latin-American artists, some of them part of
the institution´s Fine Art Collection.
For years, ours efforts
have been focussed on increasing the mutual knowledge in the cultural
field between the different countries in our area throughout important
exhibitions not only in Cuba but also in many places around the world;
making possible a more solid and large stance of promotion and action.
Within this spirit, we intend to open
a new path to Europe, particularly in Belgium (Limburg), with a Latin-American photographic
show entitled Those from below:
a gaze to / from the power. It is a great opportunity to set a precedent
for the work of our institution in this region that has not had a cultural exhange with Latin-America
for a long time. The show includes 44 photographs by important photographers
that have developed an interesting vision of power as a subject and
the possible consequences to the society of these countries. The exhibition
also includes five contemporary belgium artist that have made special
works for it and inspired in some of the image from
Casa de las Américas´ colection.
It is known that
Latin-America has suffered for decades the reckless imposition of an
order that has found the resistance by most of the people inside and
outside its nations. The differences and also the similarities between
them have determined a diverse, and therefore, accessible reference
code used by the photographers as a way to let their own voice be heard.
The intention of this show is not to emerge as the “official history”
of the political and social life in Latin-American countries, an ambitious
presumption in fact, but to give a brief sight to the reality of a continent
as far as the image, that amazing obsession, should serve to our memory.
I want to thank all
those who have helped us to make this exhibition possible and just invite
you to enjoy it as well.
Thank you.
